An Open Letter
By Dave Klecha | June 25, 2008
Dear Tool,
Thanks so much for stealing my iPod and my digital camera out of my car. I realize I probably should have locked it, but that’s really no excuse.
If there’s a silver lining, it’s that I think both the camera and the iPod did not have much life left in them, as the flash on the camera was broken and the iPod had issues syncing. I hope you like the collected works of Genesis because I don’t think you’ll be able to get them off there–or, at least, you won’t be able to get anything else on there if you do manage a factory reset. Also, good luck on explaining to your friends the deep and personal meaning behind the quotation laser etched into the back. “Manuscripts Don’t Burn,” indeed.
Also, thanks for passing up the portable harddrive under the front seat that had all my music and pictures and writing backups on it. Good call.
No love,
Dave

You know, I thought I would never get the chance to write one of these no-love letters, but here I am. What I have to say surprised me was the actual concern and interest the responding officer showed when I called them to file the police report for insurance. (Boo hiss, $500 comprehensive deductible on my auto insurance, btw. Just enough not to cover either the iPod or the camera.) He seemed genuinely interested when I said that it looked like the iPod-jacker had gone through a couple of empty video card boxes in my backseat, and actually retained them as evidence. After years of being told by TV, movies, and common sense that cops turn their noses up to petty theft investigations, dude’s attitude was a little surprising.
Also fun in that interaction was that dude has the case of an arson here in town (which is, of course, really insurance fraud), and his prime suspect is the ex-wife of a client of mine. That she did it made the grapevine in our little industry pretty darn quickly, and the cop and I shared a chuckle over that.
Anyway, now I’m down an iPod and the camera I used to take pictures on the road, and of stuff for work. Sucks to be me, especially with the deductible thing I mentioned above. Time to go scrape together some pennies.
